AAU/TRAVEL BASKETBALL?

The Varsity A.C. travel basketball teams were started by Brian Krzynowek, and began to participate in tournaments in 1989 under the name of the Doylestown Stars.  A few years later he changed the team name to the Varsity Athletic Club since so many players were coming from all over the Akron/Canton area to play for his teams. 

Since 1989 thousands of boys and girls have played on our teams and many went on to play in college and the pros!  We are well known for our development of the fundamental skills of the game, and our coaches work hard on the individual development of the players. 

We place great emphasis on player’s improvement of their basketball skills — “we don’t just work on plays-we work on our player’s skills!”  This is probably the quote we hear most from parents when their son/daughter comes to play for us from another travel team!  We feel that the reason most families choose to play spring travel basketball is for their child to improve, that is why individual player’s skill development will always be our #1 priority !   I have put together this informational sheet for you in an effort to answer most of your questions.

WHAT IS AAU/TRAVEL BASKETBALL?

Our travel basketball program is for boys/girls in the 4th-12th grades.  AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) is just one of many organizations that sponsor spring travel basketball tournaments for these types of travel teams.  There are many other nationwide organizations that sponsor these kinds of tournaments also but since AAU was the first to do this, many people just refer to spring basketball as AAU ball.  The travel basketball season is March-May. Teams will practice once per week and play multiple (3-6) games, on weekends within a 1/2 hour drive of Akron! EACH PLAYER SHOULD PLAY IN 30-50 GAMES DURING THESE 2 MONTHS

(basically getting an extra season of organized basketball)

HOW DO I GET ON A VARSITY A.C. TEAM?

We will be holding tryouts January & March.  We’ll have a team in every grade of boys/girls with 10-11 players per team.  All teams are formed by your current grade. It is recommended that you wear a shirt/jersey with you name/school/number on it as much as possible to tryouts to make it easier for us to recognize you!

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST TO PLAY ON OUR TRAVEL TEAMS?

With the current economic conditions we have decided to keep our fees the same as the past 2 seasons—$220 per person

(even if it means we will lose money this year we hope you will remember this for future seasons)!  If you have not played on a VAC team before you will need to purchase a uniform for $75.

HOW MUCH WILL I PLAY IN THE GAMES?

There are no guarantees on playing time.  The harder you work, the better you’ll get, the more you will play.  Every player is guaranteed to play in every game, unless there is a disciplinary problem, however the amount of playing time is by the coaches discretion. Also, please understand that because you are often playing multiple games in the same day the whole team needs to play to be able to make it thru the tournaments!
